Rose Hugh-Smith has always loved horses, ever since she first rode a pony at the age of 4. She fell in love with dressage absolutely by accident. After doing eventing with her very enthusiastic pony, who galloped along and happily jumped over fences with Rose holding on, Rose decided that she would love to try her hand at dressage as this is all about control. And she made a great choice, as dressage allowed her to compete internationally, representing Team GB and gaining a lot of sponsors on the way to make sure her horses get the best possible care.
While being a full-time professional rider, Rose also completed her schooling and gained a university degree at Warwick in Politics, Philosophy and Law. We talked to her about what it takes to balance school life while starting a career in sport from a young age, as well as how the mindset of athlete teenagers may differ from that of non-athlete teenagers.
