Gap years may invoke images of back-packing travel around the world for students and invoke ideas of wasted time by parents. But gap years can be a very productive time-out. A time to stop the exam treadmill for a while; to reflect on what to do going forward.
With the pandemic, gap year travel has been severely impacted and the lovely trips to Peru or Thailand or doing some work experience in Australia have all but evaporated. But the value of the time off is not bound by location. And much can be achieved close to home. TalksforTeens.com spoke to Becky Hyde about her UK based gap year. How to make the most of it even if you do not have big plans lined up beforehand.
Becky went with the flow, applied for work experience close to home at a pharmaceutical company and learned a ton of new things. After that, she joined the Small Business Saturday campaign and toured the UK for 5 weeks. Becky says that the experiences she has had during her gap year really changed her and she also changed her final university degree choice as a result of her gap year endeavours. Instead of reading Finance she has now started a degree in Natural Sciences. Becky thinks everyone should take a gap year. It is amazing, she says.
